How to transcribe a WhatsApp voice message to text
A six-minute voice note is six minutes you cannot skim, cannot search and cannot read in the middle of a meeting. As text it takes twenty seconds to read, and it stays saved even if the chat is deleted.
Online Transcript does not connect to WhatsApp or read your chats: there is no bot and no integration, on purpose. The route is to get the voice note out as a file and upload it. Step by step
- Export the voice note from your phoneOn Android, press and hold the voice message, tap the share icon and save it to your files or Drive. On iPhone, press and hold, choose Forward, tap the share icon in the corner and use Save to Files. It comes out as an OPUS or M4A file depending on the phone.
- Or download it from WhatsApp Web or the desktop appHover over the voice message, open the arrow menu and choose Download. This is the easiest route if you have several messages to transcribe or want the text on your computer.
- Upload the fileOpen the site on the same device — it works in the phone browser — and upload the audio. OPUS, OGG and M4A are accepted directly, along with MP3, WAV, FLAC and AAC: nothing to convert.

What you get and what you do not
You get the full text of the message in the language it was spoken in, punctuated and split into paragraphs, ready to copy or download as .txt. With a free account you can also run it through the content tools, for example to turn a long, rambling voice note into clean text.
You do not get speaker labels, timestamps or subtitles, and the site does not translate: a voice note in Portuguese comes back in Portuguese. There is no link to your WhatsApp account either; you pick and upload each voice message yourself.
If WhatsApp will not let you save the audio
Sometimes the share option is missing: view-once voice messages, chats with certain privacy settings turned on, or a phone managed by your employer. What is left is to play the message on speaker and record it with the voice recorder on another phone or a computer, which usually produces an M4A file that uploads without trouble.
Re-recording loses quality, especially with background noise: do it in a quiet room, with the volume up and the microphone close to the speaker. And if the sender set the message not to be saved, it is worth asking them first.
WhatsApp's own transcripts versus uploading the file
WhatsApp has its own voice message transcripts, generated on the phone and turned on under Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts. If you have it and the message is short, it is the fastest option: nothing to export.
Its limits show up with long or important messages: it only covers some languages, is rolling out gradually by phone and app version, and the text stays inside the chat instead of becoming a file you can keep, edit or paste into another document. For a client's voice note that needs to be on record, or a ten-minute message you want to summarize, uploading the file is still the way to go.
Why voice notes transcribe so well
A voice note is close to the ideal recording: one person, the phone near their mouth, nobody talking over them and no second voice at a different distance. Those are exactly the conditions that decide accuracy, and a voice note meets all of them by default.
The usual weak spots remain: proper names, place names and numbers. If the message contains an address or an amount, check it against the audio.

What format are WhatsApp voice messages?
Usually OPUS (sometimes with a .ogg extension) and, on some phones, M4A. All of them upload directly, with no conversion.
