Turn a video into text
Upload the video file as it is and get everything that's said back as readable text. No need to export the audio or change the format first — the site does that for you.
It works with phone recordings, camera footage, recorded lectures, downloaded webinars or any MP4 sitting on your computer. If the video is already on YouTube, paste the link instead and skip the upload.
Transcribe for free60 minutes a month at no cost, no card and no sign-up to try it.
How it works
- Pick the videoIn 'Audio or video file' mode, select the MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV or AVI from your computer or phone. Up to 50 MB on the free plan and up to 1 GB on Pro and Max.
- Check the estimateThe site reads the video's length and tells you roughly how long it will take before it starts.
- Read, copy or downloadThe audio track is separated and transcribed, and the text comes back with punctuation and paragraphs. Copy it or download it as .txt.
What happens to your video
For a transcript the picture adds nothing: it's all in the sound. So as soon as the file arrives, the server extracts the audio track and deletes the video right away. Only the audio is transcribed.
That means it doesn't matter whether the video is 4K or low resolution — what matters is that the voice is clear.
Very large videos
On the free plan each file can be up to 50 MB, which usually covers a few minutes of phone video. On Pro and Max the limit rises to 1 GB: an hour at normal quality usually fits; an hour in 4K may not.
If your video is over your plan's limit, export just the audio (any video editor or VLC can do it) and upload it as an MP3: it's a fraction of the size and the result is the same. Your plan counts minutes, not megabytes.
Frequent questions
Which video formats are supported?
MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV, AVI, M4V, 3GP, MPEG, WMV and FLV. The video needs an audio track: a silent screen recording has nothing to transcribe.
Does it create subtitles for the video?
No. The output is plain text downloaded as .txt, with no timestamps and no .srt or .vtt files.
How much of my quota does a video use?
As long as the audio runs. A 20-minute video uses 20 minutes of your plan, whatever the file size.
